Graduation Requirements

As stipulated by the Tennessee Department of Education, CHS only awards diplomas to students who earn the required 20 credits during grades 9-12.

Credits

CHS has a 12-month academic calendar. There are two semesters during the academic year. The school uses a schedule with 0.5 credits earned per course each semester, and one credit per school year. Students attend five (5) academic classes per day, and thus can receive 2.5 academic credits per semester and 5.0 academic credits per year. Students must also enroll in the wellness program, for which they receive an additional 0.5 wellness credit each semester, and 1.0 wellness credit per year. CHS allots one class period per day for wellness in addition to the five academic periods; therefore, students can earn up to 6.0 total credits per year.

Grading System

  • Numerical grades are given in all classes, except for the pass/no credit grades earned in the wellness program. In addition, the narrative report cards are used to report student progress. CHS recognizes the following grading scale:
  • A 90-100 (4 points on the grade point average)
  • B 80-89 (3 grade points)
  • C 70-79 (2 grade points)
  • D 65-69 (1 grade point)
  • F 0-65 (0 grade points)
  • P (Credit given for the course, but no grade points computed)
  • NC (No credit given for the course, and no grade points computed)

Courses Offered

CHS offers all courses required by the Tennessee Department of Education for graduation from a state-approved high school. Due to its limited enrollment, CHS does not offer every class every semester, but instead determines its class schedule based on the needs of the students enrolled. Credits not offered by an instructor will be fulfilled through accredited web-based curricula.
